Professor of Communication School, and Director of Pacific Media Center Professor David Robie marked World Press Freedom Day last week in a seminar covering "targeting" and murder of Journalists, as well as media circumstances in West Papua.

During a seminar on Friday 3 May to coincide with World Press Freedom Day, David Says astonishing statistics about journalists killed in their duties around the world.

Statistics show 65 journalists killed worldwide by 2017, "David said." Of the 65 journalists killed, 7 of these people are referred to as citizen journalists. "

"Although these statistics show a decline from the previous year, the growth of" hatred "for media and targeting journalists is a worsening problem."

Also on the agenda of the seminar is a discussion of media affecting areas such as the Melanesian region of West Papua in Indonesia.

"There are more independent journalists who are disappointed," David said. "These journalists take on the role of 'citizen journalists' and publish countless stories on their own blogs."

David highlighted the work of Papua New Guinea journalist and Pacific Media Center collaborator Scott Waide, who curates and publishes articles by independent journalists and citizens on his My Land My Country blog. as an example of this phenomenon.
